Thrift Store Before & Afters

A few months ago I went to Bishop's Attic (a thrift store in Palmer) to shop. I was inspired by Grosgrain's "Thrift Store Thursday" posts and wanted to "refashion" some XL shirts into maternity shirts. I took some "before" photos after I bought them, but never got around to doing anything with them until these last few weeks.

I learned from Kathleen, the writer of Grosgrain, that you don't have to stick to your size when thrift shopping, because it's easy to cut/sew things down to your size, so I bought several things from the plus-size section.

To do this shirt, I laid it out on the ground and laid a shirt that fits me on top of it. I cut around the top shirt so that the huge one was the same size, and just sewed up the side seams. Because this shirt was so huge, the shoulder seams were way off of my shoulders, so to make the sleeves, I just cut off the sleeves at the shoulder seam and hemmed them to make little cap sleeves.

For this cardigan, I just turned it inside out, and sewed new side seams and sleeve seams about 3-4 inches in from the original ones, cut off the extra fabric, and voila!

Value Village is opening in Wasilla this week, so stay tuned for more makeovers!
