A Play Quilt For The Girls

I finished my second quilt a few weeks ago and finally got around to taking some pictures.
I was looking through "fat-quarter bundles" (sets of 1/4 yard cuts of coordinating fabrics) at Joann's and fell in love with this vintage kid print. I had a few ideas of what to do with it but finally decided to have it be a quilt to have upstairs for Mollie and Delia to play on or lay on the couch with.
The quilt pattern is called a "disappearing nine-patch" and the way you make it is really cool and much simpler than it looks. Here are the instructions I used. You take all of your 5" squares and make as many "nine-patches" as you can. This is a nine patch:
Then you cut each nine-patch through the center from top to bottom and side to side to make 4 squares like this:
Once you do this to each nine-patch, you'll have a huge pile of squares that you can arrange however you like. I did mine randomly, but there are other ways you can arrange them that form more of a pattern (just Google "disappearing nine patch" for examples).
Here's a close-up of the binding:

I used a solid for the backing and I like the way the quilting stands out:

I have two more quilts to share soon so stay tuned!

  1. I love this! I don't really know how to use a sewing machine very well, but it is a goal of mine to learn very soon!
